can you make a new piece of jewelry look antique?
i got this necklace and i really like it but i want to make it look like its antique (old) and i'm just wondering if i can take it to a jeweler and they could do that?
i don't care if it looks ugly i just want to know if it can be done.
If your necklace is silver, yes. Beautiful patinas can be achieved on most silver jewelry items.
Be sure to consider whether your necklace has any other components which might not be compatible with the following process first, but if it is a silver necklace you or your jeweler can use this process:
Oxidation is the key to antiquing metal necklaces. For silver, you can purchase liver of silver, which is available as a liquid or in lump form. Dilute it with hot water per the manufacturer's instructions, and then immerse your impeccably clean jewelry item.
Fingerprints (because of the skin's natural oils) will disrupt the finish, so use tweezers to manipulate the jewelry. The amount of time you leave the item in the liver of silver will determine the resulting color. Pull the piece out from time to time and shift the tweezers' grip to a different location to both check the color progression and avoid untreated spots where the tweezers contact the metal.
When you like the look, wash the jewelry item off with clean water. You can use silver polish to bring out the raised areas or highlight the silver.
