What are the affects on animals in a lead-based paint home?
We moved into a lead-based paint home in the middle of October, and out of nowhere three nights ago my German Shephard got the runs bad! I tried to give him rice and hamburger to get him constipated but that didn't work. He didn't eat anything odd before then so it isn't that, he still has the runs and today when I took him for a walk, I noticed blood in his stool. His nose is wet and cold so he's not 'sick'. Then my boyfriend's boxer just threw up some yellow-colored liquid that reminds me of bile. She's only had the normal amount of food we feed her in the morning. We were about to feed them for supper but then she threw up. However, our Boston Terrier seems fine...now...
My question: Could they have gotten into something or could this be the lead, mold, or asbestos in our home?
Short answer, yes. They may have gotten into something or there may be something in the home that could cause these symptoms. Or, it could be a total coincidence.
Lots of things can cause diarrhea. Your GSD may have gotten into something, come into contact with contaminated feces and picked up something, or, knowing GSDs and how many of them have "sensitive" GI systems, it could just be that the stress of major changes (new home, probably new schedule too) catching up to them. Take a stool sample in to the vet tomorrow and have them do a fecal trio to check for parasites or bacterial overgrowth. BTW, a cold wet nose is NOT an indicator of a dog's health. Extremely ill dogs can still have a cold wet nose and perfectly healthy dogs can have a warm dry nose (especially right after waking up).
The "yellow-colored liquid" that the boxer threw up probably is bile. Many dogs will vomit bile if they have an empty stomach so if it had been several hours since breakfast she may have just been nauseous from the lack of anything in her stomach.
